How to enable/disable Under Construction Mode

By enabling Under Construction Mode users will not be able to access the site’s content. They will only see the under construction page that you can customize with the UnderConstructionPage plugin. It is possible to set exceptions.

Turn on the Under Construction Mode

Once you are ready to set your website under construction, it will be necessary just to push one button to activate the mode. There are two instances of the button:

  1. Button in the admin bar
  2. Button in the Main settings tab

After clicking one of the buttons, it will turn green and your site will be set under construction. Also, a new option will appear (if you click the button in the admin bar, you will be redirected to the settings screens) which will allow you to set HTTP response codes.

HTTP Response Codes

Settings -> UnderConstruction -> Main

Responses codes are issued by a server in response to a browser’s request. By setting the correct code, you can change the way your site behaves while under construction:

  • 200 OK – Standard response to successful HTTP requests. Use for coming soon pages, landing pages, and sales page.
  • 503 Service Unavailable – Use it only in maintenance mode and under construction pages when the site should not be indexed by search engines until it’s done.
  • 404 Not Found – The requested resource could not be found but may be available in the future. Use it only if you have the reason for this code.
