Instagram, one of the world’s leading social media platforms, uses a variety of icons and symbols to make navigation easy and communication effective. However, for new users or those returning to the app after a break, some of these symbols might be confusing. Let’s break down the most common Instagram icons and what they mean.
1. Home Icon (House)
This icon, shaped like a small house, is located on the bottom left of the screen. Tapping it takes you to the home feed, where you can see posts from the accounts you follow, as well as suggested posts based on your interests.
2. Search Icon (Magnifying Glass)
The magnifying glass icon in the bottom menu represents the Explore page. Here, Instagram suggests posts, reels, and accounts based on your activity. You can also use the search bar at the top to find specific accounts, hashtags, or locations.
3. Reels Icon (Play Button)
The Reels icon, resembling a video camera or play button, is the gateway to Instagram Reels — a section dedicated to short, entertaining videos. Here, you can explore popular or trending reels that Instagram curates based on your interests.
4. Shopping Bag Icon
This icon opens Instagram Shop, where you can browse products and purchase items directly from the app. Instagram collaborates with various brands to bring a tailored shopping experience within the platform.
5. Profile Icon (Silhouette or Your Profile Picture)
Located at the far-right of the bottom menu, this icon takes you to your own profile page. Here, you can view your posts, reels, and tagged photos, edit your profile, and see your follower and following lists.
6. Heart Icon (Notifications)
The heart icon, located at the top or bottom of the screen (depending on updates), shows your notifications. Tapping it reveals likes, comments, new followers, and other interactions with your posts. You can also see follower requests here if your account is private.
7. Paper Plane Icon (Direct Message)
The paper plane symbol in the upper-right corner opens Direct Messages. Here, you can send and receive private messages, photos, and videos with individuals or groups.
8. Plus Icon (+)
The plus symbol allows you to create a new post, story, reel, or live video. After tapping it, you’ll be able to upload photos or videos from your camera roll or start capturing directly through the app.
9. Three Dots Icon (More Options)
You’ll find the three dots icon (⋮) on posts and profiles. This opens a menu with additional options like reporting, sharing, hiding posts, or blocking a user.
10. Icons on Stories
– Eye Icon: Shows who has viewed your story.
– Heart Eyes, Laughing, Fire, etc.: Quick emoji reactions for stories.
– Music Note: Add music to your story.
– Chain Link Icon: Links to a website or other content, available to some accounts.
These icons make Instagram intuitive and user-friendly by providing shortcuts for essential features. Understanding these symbols helps you navigate the app effectively, whether you’re posting content, engaging with others, or simply exploring.
